PhD by research in Linguistics

There is currently no coursework requirement on PhD candidates. The PhD will be earned on the basis of a thesis of between 60,000 and 100,000 words or 180-300 pages plus any acknowledgments, appendices, tables, charts, diagrams, and bibliography.

Applicants for direct admission to PhD are normally expected to already have a Master's degree in Linguistics. Applicants with a Master's degree in some related area, or applicants with demonstrable (relevant) postgraduate work experience or academic achievement can -- if they satisfy the entry conditions -- apply for probationary PhD candidature.

A PhD normally takes three years of full-time study. A maximum of eight years part-time study is permitted.

Prospective research students should refer to How to Apply. The first step is to complete the on-line Pre-Application Form.
