Undergraduate Studies in Linguistics

We changed the structure of the Linguistics major in 2005. The new major structure allows students more flexibility. We have also introduced some exciting new units in the area of language endangerment.

Requirements for a Major or a Minor in Linguistics

The course of study for the Bachelor of Arts (a total of 144 points) includes:

  1. an arts major (normally 48 points)
  2. an arts minor (normally 24 points)
  3. another first-year arts sequence (12 points)
  4. another 12 points of Arts at any year level

(1-4) total 96 points. Additional points may be taken in disciplines inside or outside the Faculty of Arts. A minimum of 36 points must be taken at third-year level.

Major sequence

A major sequence in Linguistics consists of the 1st Year sequence LIN1010 and LIN1020
(or, if taken prior to 2001, LIN1030 and LIN1040)

plus

12 or 18 points (two or three units) at 2nd Year level and
18 or 24 points (three or four units) at 3rd Year level

Minor sequence

A minor sequence in Linguistics consists of the 1st Year sequence LIN1010 and LIN1020
(or, if taken prior to 2001, LIN1030 and LIN1040)

plus

12 points (two units) at 2nd or 3rd Year level

Students are encouraged to consider enrolling in at least a one year study of a language.

It is expected that students who MAJOR IN LINGUISTICS will have (or have had) the experience of learning or acquiring a language other than their first language. Students who do not otherwise meet this expectation should take LIN2370 /3370 Aboriginal languages of Australia OR LIN2070 /3070 Eastern Austronesian languages (next offered in 2007) as part of their major sequence.

Students majoring in Linguistics will have passed at least one unit from each of the following four groups, totalling 24 points in all. The other two units (12 points) may come from any of the four groups.

Group 2: Sound and Meaning

Group 3: Language and Society

Group 4: Applications

Students will take the additional 6 points at 2nd/3rd year level.

Most second/third year units are offered alternate years:
those units not offered in 2009 will be offered in 2010; those offered in 2009 will once again be available in 2011.
