Writing Courses for students
Information about the Unit's writing courses for students are set out above. Regular courses offered include:
- Studying and writing course for undergraduates
- Course for international students
- Weekend workshops for part-time students
- Seminars for international graduate students
Please bring these courses to the attention of any of your students who you think may benefit from them. Students may pick up copies of the AALLU brochure from your school's general office or from the Unit, Room 129, Menzies Building.
In addition we are happy to discuss with you the mounting of special sessions for individuals or groups of students in your subjects who are experiencing difficulty.
Tutorials or seminars integrated into your courses
The Unit will respond to invitations to take tutorials or seminars which you might build into your teaching program. They can focus on the nexus between modes of writing in your discipline and the material being covered in your subject. Such sessions have been conducted successfully in a number of subjects over the years, ranging from first year to postgraduate.
Student referral service
You may refer students for individual assistance with the Unit if you think they need help with their work. This service is not restricted to students who have trouble with English sentence structure; we can cover a range of matters as set out above in the introduction to the Unit.
We would be grateful if you would ring an AALLU staff member or send a note saying what you perceive the problem to be. The attached referral form can be used for this purpose.
Analysis of learning and writing problems
We have particular expertise in analysing the nature of students' learning and language problems, using their written work as data. If you think there is a significant group of students in a subject whose work needs improving, such an analysis can often reveal the source of difficulties and suggest ways in which the students' approach to learning might be modified to overcome them.
