This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Soekarno, Indonesia's 1st President, as well as his daughter Megawati's taking that high office. In view of the revival of Soekarno's popularity in contemporary Indonesia, it is worth looking again at the contribution he made to the development of the Indonesian nation. Perceptions of the nation have changed since Soekarno's presidency and the idea of Indonesia and its place in the world is now once more up for redefinition. These lectures will consider Soekarno within the framework of changing perceptions of Indonesia's past and in the context of current debates and struggles to orient Indonesia's future.
