Second Herb Feith Memorial Lecture 2004

Honouring the memory of the late Herb Feith - teacher, scholar, activist and humanitarian

Herb Feith (1930-2001) was Australia's finest scholar of Indonesia. His example and idealism inspired the founding of the Volunteer Graduate Scheme that developed into Australian Volunteers International. Teaching politics at Monash University from 1962 to 1990, he led generations of students to share his passionate concern for Indonesia, international politics, democracy, human rights, peace studies and conflict resolution.

About the speaker

Professor Wang Gungwu (PhD History, University of London) is a specialist in Chinese Overseas, Chinese History, Nationalism & Migrations in the Asian region. He was Chairman of The Institute of East Asian Political Economy (1996-1997) before it was reconstituted as The East Asian Institute and is also Faculty Professor, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, National University of Singapore ( NUS ). He was Vice-Chancellor of The University of Hong Kong from 1986 to 1995, and is an Emeritus Professor and former Director of the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, Australian National University, Canberra. A close friend and colleague of Herb Feith, Professor Wang Gungwu's visit to Melbourne on this occasion will not involve any other public presentations apart from this lecture.
