Manga Library and Café
The JSC Manga Library was established in November 2002 as part of Monash University's Japanese Studies Centre and is the first venue of its kind in Australia to provide both opportunities of education and entertainment through the incorporation of Japanese popular culture, making Japanese manga available to students and non-students alike. This innovative space continues to provide a unique environment in which Japanese popular culture can be easily accessed. The library is currently run by local and international students at Monash.
The library is modeled on the concept of Japanese internet cafes, or manga kissa, offering an extensive collection of over 7000 Japanese manga and other related texts such as magazines, videos and novels. The library provides an exclusive environment and opportunity to access popular Japanese culture from the past and present, and also access over 20 years of study and research and publications that have been undertaken by the studies centre.
The Manga Library is currently staffed by over 30 volunteers, from Monday to Friday, and over 200 members are currently subscribed to the library. Members are kept informed about activities within the library, various events and projects are held throughout the year including sessions how to draw manga and manga translation workshops. More recently the library has played host to two symposiums, in an attempt to bring artists, academics, and industry professionals (e.g. Tokyopop, Madman and OzTaku) together to explore and discuss the popularity and influence of the Japanese pop-culture.
