NCSAS Postgraduate Workshop: 7th Honours & Postgraduate Residential Workshop on South Asia 2002

Sponsored by the Australia India Council (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Canberra)

4-6 July 2002, International House, 241 Royal Parade Parkville (Melbourne).

The National Centre for South Asian Studies will be holding the 7th residential workshop in Melbourne. The two-day workshop will follow on directly from the ASAA Conference on 1-3 July, 2002.

Registration and Sponsorship

In order to keep costs down, it is important for potential participants to let the NCSAS know about their desire to attend immediately so that airfares and other arrangements can be made. The NCSAS will cover the costs of economy travel and three nights accommodation in Melbourne: nights of 4 and 5 July.

Students will be required to register and provide the following to Dugald.Murray@adm.monash.edu.au :

  1. Registration fee of $70 per person
  2. Topic of thesis by the student and student email address
  3. Name of supervisor, university, department, school and discipline
  4. A half page abstract about their thesis, with particular attention to the nature of their hypothesis or core arguments

Each student will have the opportunity to explain the nature of their thesis at the workshop and to meet senior South Asia scholars who have always provided encouraging feedback.

About the Guest Speakers

Madhu Kishwar

Madhu Kishwar, prominent author, critic and civil rights litigant, this one of the guests at this year's workshop. She is the editor of Manushi, a prominent women's magazine. The journal was founded in 1978 and can be read at:

Dr D P Dubey

Dr. Devi Prasad Dubey (b. 1958) is a Lecturer in the Department of Ancient History, Culture and Archaeology of the Allahabad University since 1987. He teaches B.A. and M.A. classes in the department and has also attended four refresher courses in History and one Orientation Programme in the Academic Staff College of the Allahabad University. Dr. Dubey graduated from the Allahabad University with a degree in Ancient History. His Ph.D. thesis from the Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi (1990) was on 'A Study in the Historical and Cultural Personality of Prayaga'.

Dr Dubey is currently working on the Art and Architecture of the Gahadavala Period and is compiling a conpus of Pratihara inscriptions. Dr Dubey is a member of several academic bodies including:
