The Importance of Asia

To understand Asia is to appreciate the growing cultural, scientific, intellectual and military impact of the rising powers of the twenty-first century. The civilisations of China and India are also among the world's oldest and most sophisticated. Asia's influence and complexity and presents researchers with unique challenges and opportunities.

Research on Asia at Monash

Monash University is one of the leading centres in Asian studies in Australia, with over 200 researchers working on various aspects of Asian life. Monash Asia Institute offers a number of advantages for research students. Staff and affiliates possess a broad range of expertise encompassing the history, culture, politics, and economy of Asia. This breadth complements the multidisciplinary orientation of study, and informs several ongoing research projects. Strong international connections assist students in preparing and undertaking fieldwork.
Monash Asia Institute is conveniently at Caulfield campus, located just twelve minutes by train from the city and connected to Clayton campus by regular shuttle bus. Much specialist material is available to researchers at the Asian Studies Research Collection of Matheson Library.
