131. The state in Indonesian villages: authority, autonomy and apparatus

Nicholas Herriman, 2009, $11.00, ISBN 9781876924690

Studies of Indonesia have characterised the state as all-powerful and overbearing, and as dominating society. This paper offers a critique of the idea that local representatives are simply agents of their state superiors by viewing interactions between the state and the local community from ‘below’. Drawing on research into the killings of alleged sorcerers in Banyuwangi District, East Java, Dr Herriman demonstrates that state power in Banyuwangi is negotiated and that local state officials negotiate with, and are influenced by, local residents.

130. Global Trends in Religion and the Reaffirmation of Hindu Identity in Bali

Thomas Reuter, 2008, $11.00, ISBN 9781876924638

This paper explores three characteristic forms of post-modern religiosity that have emerged as broad international trends from the 1960s onwards—revitalisation, New Age spirituality and fundamentalism. It focuses on the worldwide proliferation of social movements for the revitalisation of local religions, illustrated with an ethnographic case study on the revival of identity among Balinese Hindus in the aftermath of the 2002 bomb attack by Muslim extremists.

129. Exploring the role of the Sailendras in early eastern Javanese history

Roy E Jordaan, 2007, rrp $11.00. ISBN 9781876924584

The rulers who called themselves 'ornaments of the Sailendra family' - Sailendra meaning Lord of the Mountain - were the patron-builders of many, if not all, of the Buddhist temples in central Java dating from about the last quarter of the eighth to the mid-ninth century CE. Extolled for their might and glory, and represented as the supreme rulers in the Malay Archipelago, the dynasty maintained a vast network of diplomatic and commercial contacts extending as far as India and China. What was their role in eastern Javanese history? This paper offers new data to elucidate this matter.

128. Colonising Poso: the Diary of Controleur Emile Gobee, June 1909-1910

Translated and with an introduction by Joost Cote, 2007, rrp $11.00. ISBN 9781876924577

While the colonisation of Central Sulawesi was a process that was unique to the particular demographic, social, political and economic characteristics of the region, in broad terms it replicated Dutch colonial policy and practice in the rest of the archipelago at the beginning of the 20th century. The diary of Aspirant Controleur Emile Gobee, records the process which imposed the relocation and resettlement of the Pamona people of the Poso region of Central Sulawesi into villages and therefore began a dramatic process of change. The document  provides a rare example of the process of colonialism and goes to the heart of understanding the nature of the colonial project in the Dutch East Indies.
