Research Project - Flexible Transnationalism: Indian students in Melbourne, Australia

Looking for overseas Indian Students

Are you a student and have you come here from India to study in Melbourne? If you are, you might be interested in participating in this research project.

My name is Michiel Baas and I am an anthropologist and PhD candidate from the University of Amsterdam. I am here till November 2005 to do research on Indian students in Melbourne. The research is hosted by the Monash Asia Institute at Monash University.

If you are an overseas Indian student completing a diploma, bachelor or master degree in Melbourne, I would like to meet you to talk about:

By participating in this study of overseas Indian students in Melbourne, you will be helping to create a better understanding of the processes that trigger new forms of international mobility.

Typically, an interview will take about 1 to 2 hours but this is entirely up to you. If you have less time that is also fine; of course longer is also not a problem! The information provided by you will be used for the writing of a PhD dissertation on this topic. It is likely that this dissertation will eventually be published as a book. None of the individuals participating in the interviews, however, will be named or referred to in any way that would enable them to be identified by third parties. This means that confidentiality is fully guaranteed .

Before you agree to any interview, I will provide you with an explanatory statement that describes in detail the nature of this project, guarantees your confidentiality, and ensures that you can withdraw from the interview process at any time. This project confirms to guidelines of the Standing Committee on Ethics in Research Involving Humans (SCERH) of Monash University. Your formal approval to the interview process and the use of the data will also be sought.
