Theme: "Cultures and Technologies in Asia - the paradigm shifts" 9 - 13 February 2004 Mumbai, Maharashtra State, India
This is the first annual international conference held by the Monash Asia Institute ( MAI ) since its foundation in 1988. The Monash Asia Institute has invited a number of key regional institutes to collaborate on this venture. The conference is based on current research by Monash scholars across all the ten faculties of the university. The MAI conference will be held in parallel with the 7th Annual Conference of the UNESCO International Centre for Engineering Education (UICEE) based at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.
The MAI acknowledges the generous support of the following organisations for this conference:
| Monash International | |
| Polaris Software |
Objectives of the conference
- Identifying the shifting paradigms of cultures and technologies in Asia
- Promoting the exchange of ideas in the region on this subject
- Promoting international collaborative research programs and the exchange of academic and non-academic specialists and postgraduates
- Promoting the publication of research on this theme
- Establishing an ongoing network of exchange between scholars via email and the internet
- Generating research results of relevance to policy making in the Asia-Pacific region.
Themes
'Cultures and Technologies in Asia' is broadly conceived, and the Conference committee will be pleased to receive proposals about a wide variety of papers. However, a special importance will be given to papers that are deliberately inter-disciplinary and seek to address the interrelationships between cultures and technologies rather than papers addressing only one of these. Participants are encouraged to write papers reflecting on whether and how technological change is having an impact on culture, or whether and how cultural changes (political, economic, social, business) are influencing technological innovation. Amongst the specific Asian based themes that the conference seeks to address are the following:
- Rapid urbanisation in Asia
- Information technology and poverty alleviation
- Environmental change, sustainable development and migration
- Work, leisure and consumerism
- Human rights
- Corporate governance
- The role and uses of the internet
Invited Special Sessions
The conference will include special invited sessions on:
- The myth of the lazy native revisited
- Green chemistry: making industrialisation cleaner and cheaper
Refereed conference proceedings
The Conference Proceedings will be fully refereed in strict compliance with the best international standards. Please read the notes on the call for papers for more details about submission of abstracts.
