Undergraduate Indigenous Studies

Welcome to the Monash Indigenous Centre (MIC) where students have opportunities to gain knowledge and understanding of Australian Indigenous cultures, traditions and histories. Our courses have strong links with the Programme for Australian Indigenous Archaeology, a new initiative of the School of Geography and Environmental Science.

Units offered

A major or minor sequence in Australian Indigenous Studies is offered to Bachelor of Arts students at Clayton. Students wishing to complete this major are recommended to take a first-year sequence in Australian Indigenous Studies.

Synopsis: This unit will consider relations between indigenous and non-Aboriginal people in Australia since 1770. The main topics will include the legal basis of British sovereignty; the nature of frontier contact; violence and the dispossession of Aborigines; Aboriginal depopulation; Aborigines' responses to colonialism; government policy and practice, from segregation to assimilation; and Aboriginal political movements.
