Maya Ranganathan is an alumni of Monash University having completed her PhD in 2004. She is a post graduate in Communications from the University of Madras, India and has taught courses in journalism and media studies in universities in India and Australia.

She has worked as a journalist in a national daily in India for 12 years and continues to contribute on a range of subjects to Indian print and online publications in English.

Her current research project deals with the reception of political websites by members of Diasporas and furthers her PhD study which dealt with the potential of websites to instil and nurture national identities among audiences. While online media and identities remain her principal research interest, she has also published widely on Indian media in international refereed academic journals. She is currently co-authoring a book titled 'Indian media in the era of globalisation' to be published by Sage India, in 2009.
