Monash-Gallipoli Prize 2010

Explore Gallipoli and win a $3,500 Prize to Study Abroad

How to apply for the Monash-Gallipoli Prize 2010

Thinking of studying overseas as part of your Arts Degree?  Want to walk Gallipoli’s shore on the 95th anniversary of the Landing?

Australian Studies can take you to Anzac Cove, Istanbul and the historic hills of Tuscany in 2010.  We offer 6 and 12 point units in flexible study packages that can speed up your Arts Degree and make your study abroad experience a gateway to Europe and the World.

And if you complete any Australian Studies unit delivered on our Clayton campus you can win one of three Gallipoli Travelling Prizes valued at $3,500 each.

You don’t need to take a major/minor in Australian Studies.  All Australian Studies subjects can be electives in your current Arts degree.

Five easy steps to get to Gallipoli and Study Abroad

Step 1

Enrol in either AUS1060 Australian Idol or AUS2001/3001 Broken Earth: Australian Environmental History in Semester One 2010.  (If you’ve already completed one of these units, you’re already eligible for the $3,500 Prize).

Step 2

See which Gallipoli/Prato subject suits your study needs and your degree and send your expression of interest to cassie.goffin@arts.monash.edu.au.    All these Australian Studies subjects can count towards a major in your Arts Degree.  In June/July 2010 you can take:

AUS2002/3002  Beyond Gallipoli: Australians in Two World Wars

This subject will earn you 12 credit points.  It begins in Istanbul in the last week of June, includes 2 days in that ancient and beautiful city, and then a further 4 days exploring the Gallipoli peninsula and Troy.  The second week takes you to Prato in the hills of historic Tuscany,  Based at our Italian Study Centre you can speed up your degree by combining this unit with other subjects offered in politics, history and archaeology.  You can also apply for further subsidies from Monash Abroad.  At the end of your studies, why not take time to explore Europe?

AUS2004/3004  Gallipoli’s Shadow: Australians at War

This subject will earn you 6 credit points.  It is based at the Monash Prato centre in Italy, just outside of Florence.  It is a weeklong intensive course and includes an excursion to an historic site of war memory.  It’s designed for students who are keen to take as many subjects as possible at Prato.  If you complete a semester worth of units overseas, you are eligible for a $2500 subsidy from Study Abroad.  As this subject doesn’t include an excursion to Gallipoli, it can’t be funded by the Monash Gallipoli Prize.

AUS2005/3005  Anzac Journey: Gallipoli and the Ottomans

This subject is all about the Gallipoli campaign and will earn you 6 credit points.  Like ‘Beyond Gallipoli’ it involves study tours of Istanbul, Troy and Anzac Cove over 7 days.  It doesn’t include further study in Prato but leaves you free to explore Europe over the rest of mid semester break.  This subject is eligible for the Monash Gallipoli Prize.  You can also apply for a further subsides from Monash Abroad.

About your Gallipoli Tour

Monash University’s Study Tour of the Gallipoli Peninsula is led by the Director of the National Centre for Australian Studies, Professor Bruce Scates.  The tour will involve an in-depth study of the campaign, recreating the lives and deaths of the men who fought at Gallipoli.  It will also include cultural tours of Istanbul and Troy, two of the cultural treasures of Turkey.

Bruce is one of the world’s leading Gallipoli scholars and has led several battlefield tours of Gallipoli, Crete and the Western Front.  He also leads the Premier’s Spirit of Anzac Tour at the express invitation of the Premier of Victoria.  All the consultancies fees raised by this important work for the State government are channelled into funding these prizes.
