AUS1070 - Sport and society in Australia

Why is sport central to the Australian identity?

How has sport influenced gender, class and racial dynamics within the community?

Sport has long been central to the making of Australian identity and our Centre contributes to a major in the field of sports studies. Sport and Society in Australia introduces students to the study of Australians’ sporting obsessions. A World of Sport gives an Australian context on a global phenomenon. It considers the Olympics movement, interrogates the significance of places, stadiums and territory, and fosters a fuller understanding of new and emerging global sporting traditions. Australian Sports Writing explores the literature and journalism of sport, and the practice of writing about sport. At the centre of NCAS sports studies is the construction of heritage and identity and the gender, class and racial dynamics of sporting communities. Sport and Society in Australia features an excursion to the MCG, itself an Australian icon. This unit is the gateway to sports studies at upper level.
