About the School of Philosophy and Bioethics
Our school incorporates the Department of Philosophy and the Centre for Human Bioethics.
- Philosophy offers a full program of undergraduate studies at the Clayton campus, as well as more limited offerings at the Gippsland and Caulfied campuses. A full Philosophy major is available via Distance Education.
- Bioethics is taught primarily at the post-graduate level, though a new first-year sequence in Bioethics has been introduced in 2005.
Research Students
We are actively recruiting new MA and PhD students, particularly in the areas of research concentration listed below under Research.
Research
Australia has an international reputation for excellence in philosophy. An influential ranking of post-graduate programs in philosophy rates Monash, University of Melbourne and the Australian National University Research School as comparable to departments in the top 30 philosophy programs in the US.
Staff in the school carry out research in a variety of areas. There are research concentrations in
A project currently underway, Peer Instruction in the Humanities, aims to encourage the adoption and evaluation of peer instruction, an innovative technique for generating active learning in lectures.
The School convenes a public staff seminar series held on Friday afternoons.
Beyond the Ivory Tower
The School is committed to bringing the benefits and pleasures of philosophy and bioethics to a wider segment of the community. Among our initiatives are:
