In October 2005 he embarked on a parallel academic project, researching key aspects of MCU partnership experience, for a PhD in the Department of Politics, University of Exeter (due for completion in 2009). He is also a member of two related research projects, led by Dr. Jonathan Githens-Mazer (Exeter) and Dr. Basia Spalek (Birmingham) respectively. In September 2008 he also commenced work as a part-time lecturer at the Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence (CSTPV) at the University of St. Andrews.
