Please note that this form is not a formal research application so do not attach supporting documentation. If supervision is available, candidates will be advised to submit a formal application.
Application Deadlines
Applicants who wish to apply for a Master of Arts by research and coursework (66% research) are encouraged to apply for candidature by May or November to allow commencement of their 24 pts of coursework in either first or second semester. However, applicants for a Master of Arts (100% research) or a PhD can apply and start their candidature at any time of the year. Scholarship applicants need to time their application submission with closing dates for scholarships each year (see Scholarships).

On completion of the form local and external students should submit their applications to Postgraduate Administrator, School of Political and Social Inquiry, Faculty of Arts, Monash University, VIC 3800, Australia. International students should submit their application forms to Monash International (address on form) for processing.
Guide to Preparing a Research Proposal
Below is a useful guide to assist you in preparing a research proposal to accompany either your candidature or scholarship application. Your research proposal (three or more pages in length) should include the following:

Description of proposed project:
- What is the topic area?
- What motivated your interest in this particular area?
- What field or fields of knowledge does it engage with?
- What are the key questions you wish to explore?
- What are the aims of this project?
- What works or materials will be involved (e.g. texts, interview data etc.)?
- What methodologies are involved (e.g. discourse analysis, textual analysis, interviewing etc)?
- What key thinkers or critical works are important for this topic?
- How would you characterise the contribution to knowledge (e.g. filling a gap in the field, revising existing understandings etc)?
- What do you see as the outcomes of this research?
Brief bibliography:
(Demonstrate that you have done a preliminary search of the literature currently available in your proposed research area.)
Timeline to completion:
(Demonstrate how you plan to undertake and complete the tasks involved in producing an MA or PhD within the designated timeframe.)
Offer Letters
Offer letters for Master of Arts programs will be forwarded from the Arts Research Graduate School, whilst offer letters for PhD programs will dispatched from Monash Research Graduate School.
International Applicants

English Proficiency
Please note that English requirements for research programs in the Faculty of Arts are higher than the requirements for coursework programs and IELTS is the preferred test.
For Master of Arts by 66% research and coursework, the IELTS minimum is 6.5 with a score of at least 6 for the other individual bands. The required TOEFL is 577 or above and a score of 5 or above for the Test of Written English (TWE). For computer-based TOEFL, it is 233 and a score of 5 or above for the TWE. At the present time, internet-based TOEFL is not accepted as proof of English proficiency.
For Master of Arts by 100% research or PhD by research, the IELTS minimum is 7 with a score of at least 7 for the writing module and at least 6 for the other individual bands. The required TOEFL is 600 or above and a score of 5 or above for the Test of Written English (TWE). For computer-based TOEFL, it is 250 and a score of 5 or above for the TWE. For internet-based TOEFL it is 100 and a score of 25 in each of the written, reading, speaking and listening tests.
