Services and Facilities Provided by the School Of Political and Social Inquiry
1. Communications
Postgraduate pigeonholes are located in room W1113 in the Menzies building. They are in alphabetical order. Please check the letter of your family name regularly for any mail. If you are employed as a sessional tutor or research assistant you will normally receive a named mail box located on the 10th floor for the duration of your contact. See also the Graduate Noticeboard on the 10th floor next to Sue Stevenson's office.
2. Seminars
Different disciplines within the school hold regular seminars, as does the School as a whole. You are very welcome to attend them. There is an annual School Postgraduate Symposium, held in second semester, at which we expect you to give at least one presentation during the course of your candidature. Participation in such events helps you to understand what is involved in research.
3. School postgraduate publication prize
Every year a prize of $500 is awarded to the postgraduate student with the best refereed publication in the previous year. The awarding of this prize is a social event for postgraduates and staff in the first half of the year.Visit our postgraduate awards and prizes page
4. Accommodation
The School is not in a position to offer postgraduates office space at Clayton unless they are sessional tutors: there is simply not enough room available. There is some allocated space available at Caulfield if you prefer to work from there. See the Graduate Centre mentioned above under University.
5. Computers
There are seven networked computers available for student use in the School Postgraduate Room (W1113). A printer is connected to these computers and may be used free of charge within reason.
6. Photocopying
Students are eligible for a photocopy card per year, available from Jenny Williams in the School's General Office (W1017).
7. Equipment
You may need special equipment for your research. Some may be available for loan from the School: enquire through your supervisor. Some students require equipment for research which is not available from the School. A contribution to that equipment may be made by the School but in that case the equipment remains the property of the School. Apply through your supervisor to the Postgraduate Coordinator.
8. Training
Some students require training in certain skills not provided by the University. A contribution to that training may be made by the School. Apply through your supervisor to the Postgraduate Coordinator.
9. Conference costs
Students intending to attend a conference should first apply for travel funds from the University travel grant system, accompanied by a request for top-up funds from the Faculty. However, registration and accommodation are not met from those sources so students may apply to the School for a contribution to other documented expenses (original receipts will be needed to make claims). Apply through your supervisor to the Postgraduate Coordinator. Preference will be given to students who are presenting a paper.
Attendance by students at other conferences at which they do not give papers should not be ruled out if strongly supported by their supervisor as valuable for their research, but funding would be granted at a lower level.
9. Fieldwork Expenses
Students should apply for travel grants from the University and Faculty, but the School will entertain applications for other legitimate fieldwork expenses. To claim these expenses original receipts need to be produced. Apply through your supervisor to the Postgraduate Coordinator.
10. Editing
Students who need language assistance in writing their thesis may apply for funds from the school to pay for tutoring/editing. In that case the person providing language assistance must be approved, e.g. someone on the list of the Language and Learning Unit, and they must follow faculty rules for editing student work. Apply through your supervisor to the Postgraduate Coordinator.
11. Sessional Tutoring
Every semester limited amounts of sessional tutoring are available in the School. In the hiring of tutors, preference is given to the School's postgraduate students. If you are interested, make your interest known to the head of the relevant discipline towards the end of each semester, accompanied by your CV.
General Considerations
- All requests for funding should be made via your supervisor to the Postgraduate Coordinator who will consider them in consultation with the Deputy Coordinator.
- A record of all payments from the School's postgraduate fund will be kept by the School and will be checked whenever a new request is made to ensure that no one student receives an inequitable share of funds over the course of his or her candidature.
