Commissioned Histories - Institute for Public History

About Commissioned Histories

The first commissioned history completed and also published by the Institute for Public History was Bringing Home the Bacon: A History of the Harris Family's Castlemaine Bacon Company 1905-2005. Written by Leigh Edmonds, a member of the Professional Historians Association, this book was launched at the Castlemaine Arts Festival in April 2005. Although Bringing Home the Bacon is the Institute for Public History's first commissioned history, it was not the first history commissioned through the School. Another centenary publication, A Dreaming That Shall Not Fade: One Hundred Years of the Methodist Ladies College Old Collegians' Club, written by Monash history graduate Cathy Schapper, was launched at MLC in March 2004.

Commissioned histories continue to roll into the Institute for Public History. The Rotary Club of Prahran: Fifty years serving the community 1955-2005 has just been completed, as has a personal memoir, A Colourful Life: A Memoir of Ferencz Schwartz/Fred Agar OAM.

Father Ernie Smith began to walk with the people of St Kilda in 1982. His were the first of many steps taken in forming St Kilda’s
Sacred Heart Mission which today employs 150 staff and 450 volunteers who help thousands of people access the basic necessities of life,
connect with the community and develop support networks that nurture their lives. Against the backdrop of changing demographic and housing
patterns in Melbourne, and changes in the church and models of caring, this history of the Sacred Heart Mission traces the way this agency
has evolved and responded to the social issues of homelessness and prostitution and the effect of these on the local community of St Kilda.

What is a good school?

Does it simply provide a service for a fee? Does it embody a tradition? Does it serve a higher purpose?
How do you judge what is a good school?

This history of Haileybury in the post war years explores how its various Headmasters and Principals and their school communities
have tried to answer these questions, each in their own time and in their own way. Getting it right has never been easy but getting it
wrong has never been an option.
