This highly successful and sought-after program began in 1998 and is the only tertiary course in Australia offering training for civil celebrants. The scope of the course acknowledges both the complex nature of the role of community celebrant and the significance of ritual and celebration in the private and public spheres. The Graduate Diploma Civil Ceremonies (Monash) prepares graduates to provide a professional service to their community.
The course is offered by two modes of study, on-campus at Monash Caulfield or by Distance Learning throughout Australia. Students in either mode can undertake the four units of the course in one year of full-time study (two units per semester) or two years of part-time study (one unit per semester).
The Graduate Diploma in Civil Ceremonies is a qualification approved by the Attorney-General's Department for those seeking registration as a Civil Marriage Celebrant.
Please note: Registration as a Civil Marriage Celebrant is not automatic upon completion of an approved training course. Information about the registration process is available on the Marriage Celebrants Section of the Attorney-General's website .
In addition, canidates for registration must:
- provide evidence they are 'fit and proper' persons
- be prepared to meet annual professional development requirements
- be aware of the cap on appointments that will remain in place until September 2008
Entry to the course is offered to:
- graduates in a range of disciplines,
- non-graduates on submission of evidence of other qualifications and training, together with relevant work experience at a senior level. Non-graduate applicants must first enrol for, and satisfy, the requirements of the Faculty Certificate in Civil Ceremonies.
