Course description
Leader: Judy McNicollPoints: 12 points, SCA Band 1, 0.250 EFTSL
Offered: Caulfield first and second semester 2008. Evening and off-campus
Students undertake a period of placement with an approved professional or community group in a field related to civil ceremonies. Students negotiate with their placement venue for approximately eighty hours contact during the semester. In consultation with the course coordinator, students design a practical project relevant to their area of placement. The seminar program supports students in the development of their projects and in the completion of the 6000 word research report (see assessment details below).
Course objectives
Upon successful completion of this course students will be expected to have developed a network of professional contacts in civil ceremonies and negotiated (in consultation with the course coordinator) a period of involvement in a workplace. Students will be expected to develop their understanding of the practical and ethical challenges of working as a civil celebrant, to develop high levels of presentation and communication skills, and to contribute to the body of research related to civil ceremonies.Assessment
Project proposal (1500 words): 15%Oral presentation: 10%
Placement project (6000 words): 75%

Seminar program: 9 hoursProfessional placement: 80 hours
Students will attend three 3 hour seminars during the semester. Seminars One and Two will be held on Wednesday evenings in Orientation Week and Week 4 from 6.00pm – 9.00pm. Seminar Three will be held on the Saturday of Week 12 from 10.00am – 4.00pm. The period of professional placement will begin in Week 3 and end in Week 13.
