Thesis Writing Workshops
Thesis Writing Workshops are a new program run through GRiP, available to postgraduate students in the Faculty of Arts.
The primary aim of the Thesis Writing Workshops is to provide supplementary support to students in helping them to communicate their ideas through improved writing skills. The overall benefits for students include, but are not limited to: group support in a process which often leaves individuals feeling isolated; increased confidence in expressing their ideas; continuity of feedback and support; and improved communication skills.
Like GRiP, this involves regular meetings of small groups of students, to provide respectful peer feedback on student writing. These Thesis Writing Workshops:
- are open to students from all disciplines within the Faculty of Arts
- will be multi-disciplinary, and
- are open to students at any point in their candidature.
Duration and Frequency
The workshops will be held fortnightly and students may attend for one year, or continue for the length of their candidature. Students do not need to have been confirmed in their candidature in order to participate. While regular attendance is preferable to enable group skills to be built, it will not be mandatory.
Convenor
The groups are facilitated by GRiP Convenor Dr Kate Cregan, who completed her PhD at Monash in 1999. She has since authored, co-authored and edited books, journal articles, government reports and non-academic publications and been the recipient of an ARC APD. She is currently Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Bioethical Inquiry (Springer); she has taught across literary studies, cultural studies and sociology; actively mentored ECR colleagues; and she has extensive experience mentoring both post-graduate students and colleagues in writing national competitive grant applications.
Eligibility Criteria
The program is open to Masters by research and PhD candidates who:
- have the support for nomination of their supervisor and department, and
- are able to commit to regular attendance at the workshops.
