Chapter 11: Facilities and Services

11.7 Personal Accident Insurance Policy

All enrolled research candidates at Monash University are automatically members of a personal accident insurance scheme. The current policy is restricted to claims resulting from accidents whilst a research candidate is engaged in University/campus related activities. The policy is designed to assist in minimising the financial burden associated with injury. Costs associated with illness and disease, are not covered under the terms of the policy. Benefits include reimbursement of non-Medicare expenses to a maximum of $2000 ($150 excess applies). Other benefits include loss of earnings, permanent and partial disability and death benefits. Items of personal property and medicines are not claimable. Research candidates engaged in practical work placements arranged through their Faculty where the engagement is course related are eligible to lodge claims under the policy. This also applies to research candidates undertaking Faculty-directed study at an overseas location.

Specific conditions apply to claims. For further information and claim forms: www.sport.monash.edu.au/accident-insurance.html

Research candidates are encouraged to obtain details of the policy to ensure it meets their insurance requirements.

Any injury likely to result in a claim being lodged must be notified within five days of the accident to:

Clayton: Monash Sport. Telephone 9905 4118
Gippsland: Student Union Inc. Telephone 9902 6248 or 1800 816 620

Research candidates undertaking fieldwork, presenting at conferences or studying away need to obtain travel insurance. Travel insurance, including hospital and medical insurance, is available from the STA travel offices on the Caulfield and Clayton campuses.
