Chapter 2: Research Degrees

2.1 What is a Research Degree?

A degree counts as a research degree when at least 66 percent of the assessment is based on a thesis. A thesis is your opportunity to plan and undertake a relevant research project of interest to you and to report on your findings.

Occasionally changes occur in the structure and duration of Monash Research Higher Degrees. Make sure you are up-to-date with the requirements for your degree by regularly checking this 'Research Survival Guide' and for PhD candidates, the 'Doctoral Information Handbook' which is updated each year by Monash Research Graduate School and located at: http://www.mrgs.monash.edu.au/research/doctoral/index.html

These documents help you understand your degree requirements and how coursework components and methodology issues may vary between disciplines and Schools.
