4.7 Confirmation of Candidature for Masters Candidates
All candidates in Masters research degrees in the Faculty of Arts are required to have a confirmation of their candidature after a period of research enrolment as set out below.

The confirmation letter and form will be sent out from the Arts Research Graduate School after 3 months FT/6 months PT candidature and must be returned no later than 6 months FT/12 months PT candidature after commencement of candidature |

In addition to the written submission, candidates will also be asked to give an oral presentation to a Confirmation Panel. (Please note that the oral presentation as viva voce can be incorporated in the Confirmation Panel meeting.) The Confirmation Panel will assess candidate's research proposal and a recommendation will be given in the form of a panel report. Once the confirmation process has been completed, the panel report together with the confirmation documentation must be submitted to the Arts Research Graduate School.
The members of a confirmation panel should comprise of:
- The School Graduate Coordinator or nominee (convenor); the nominee must be a faculty-approved mentor
- The candidate's supervisor(s)
- Another member conversant with the general area of research but not directly involved with the candidate's specific project (this third member may be drawn either from within the school of from outside it)
- In addition to the Graduate Coordinator at least one member of the panel must be a fully accredited supervisor
- A fourth member may be a research student who has either already been through the review or confirmation of candidature process or is well advanced in their own candidature (not compulsory)
- At least one other member other than the supervisor must be an expert in the area
- It is recommended that a person from another discipline be invited to sit on the panel
The Arts Research Graduate School sends a reminder email to the main supervisor and candidate if the confirmation documentation is not received within 2-6 weeks after the Confirmation of Candidature is due. If no response is received, a second reminder in the form of a memorandum will be sent to the School, main supervisor and Graduate Coordinator advising them that unless the confirmation documentation is submitted within two weeks, the candidate's enrolment will be lapsed.
