Chapter 5: Variations to Candidature

5.1 Intermission of Candidature (Leave of Absence) and Withdrawal

PhD Candidates

Intermission

Intermission ' stops the clock' on candidature. Doctoral candidates may take the option to intermit when their circumstances interfere with the progress of their research project for some time, e.g. prolonged illness. The maximum period of intermission in total during candidature is 12 months, during which time research candidates are not expected to work on their research projects.

While the Research Graduate School Committee deals sympathetically with requests for intermission, candidates are expected to regard the completion of their degree as their major priority throughout their candidature.

Withdrawal

Candidates who do not wish to continue with their research program are asked to complete a form notifying the university their intention to withdraw. Further information can be obtained from: www.mrgs.monash.edu.au/research/doctoral/chapter4e.html

Due to the Federal Government Research Training Scheme policy rules, candidates who consider withdrawing with a view to possibly returning and resuming their candidature at a later date, need to first consult with the Research Training Coordinator of the Arts Research Graduate School.

Applications forms are available from the following web site: www.mrgs.monash.edu.au/research/students/variation.html

Masters Candidates

Intermission

A candidate may seek to intermit their research for a period not exceeding 12 months. As with the PhD, the period of intermission is added to the length of candidature.

Candidates seek a recommendation from their School/department/centre before lodging the form with the Arts Research Graduate School. Masters candidates on a scholarship need to submit their intermission form to ARGS who will notify the MRGS of their approval/rejection of the intermission. Scholarship Suspension forms should be attached to the intermission form and will be forwarded to MRGS once ARGS has approved the intermission. 'Change to Masters candidature details' form is available from ARGS website.

Masters candidates on scholarships who have been on a leave of absence/intermission need to complete a “Notification of Resumption of Candidature” form when they return. Forms are available from the following web site: www.mrgs.monash.edu.au/research/students/variation.html

International candidates who intend to intermit need to seek advice from the Health, Wellbeing and Development. International candidates who discontinue their studies or take an intermission are reported to DIMIA. The student visa is cancelled when the intermission is exceeding six months.

Withdrawal

Due to the Federal Government Research Training Scheme policy rules, candidates who consider withdrawing with a view to possibly returning and resuming their candidature at a later date, are advised to first consult with the Research Training Coordinator of the Arts Research Graduate School. Withdrawal form is available from ARGS website.
