Chapter 6: Supervision
6.1 Induction and Supervision of Research Candidates
The Faculty has made the following recommendations concerning supervision and research candidate contact:
Supervisors meet their research candidates at least fortnightly for full-time candidates and at least monthly for part-time candidates and always conclude a meeting with the supervisor and research candidate agreeing on the date of the next meeting; and
whenever work is handed to the supervisor for comment, the supervisor is responsible for setting a date, which is mutually agreed, for discussion.
The Faculty also recommends that schools institute a record keeping system in which supervisors keep notes on decisions made at meetings, comments on written work submitted by research candidates and any other aspect of their progress.
Candidates may also keep a log for their own records of discussions and decisions made during supervisory meetings, and to help candidates keep track of their progress and how well they are meeting agreed-upon progress requirements.
The Research Graduate School Committee guidelines specify that work be returned 'with constructive criticism, normally within two weeks for chapter-length drafts or for longer pieces normally within one month at most or within a shorter timeframe as has been determined as appropriate within the department.'
