PhD Scholarship: " A History of Women's Political Thought in Europe 1700 - 1800"
A research project headed by Assoc. Prof. Karen Green ‘A History of Women’s Political Thought in Europe 1700-1800,’ which has been funded by the Australian Research Council, is offering one PhD scholarship.
Eligibility: Applicants must have, or expect to shortly have, an honours, or masters by research degree, with first or second class honours, in philosophy, political philosophy, history of ideas or feminist theory. Alternatively, an undergraduate degree, in an appropriate discipline, with a research component deemed equivalent by Monash University to the Australian and New Zealand honours degree. A background in the history of women’s political thought and competence in German, Italian, French and/or Latin, would also be an asset. Please contact our A/Prof Karen Green or our HDR Admission Manager, Mr Joe de Pasquale with any queries about your eligibility.
Project: This three-year ARC funded project continues the research into the history of women’s ideas undertaken by Karen Green and others, which resulted in, among other outputs, in the recent book, A History of Women’s Political Thought in Europe, 1400-1700 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2009). This phase of the wider project attempts to provide an overview of women’s political thought during the eighteenth century in Europe.
The PhD topic to be pursued will be shaped by the training and skills of the successful applicant. It will in all likelihood focus on the political and philosophical ideas of one or more individual eighteenth century women thinkers.
Scholarship duration: 3 years full-time, subject to normal annual review process.
Value: Award holders will receive a stipend equal to the Australian Postgraduate Award of $20,427 per annum (2009 rate).
