Faculty of Arts Teaching & Research Scholarships

The Teaching and Research Scholarship scheme provides for awardees to pursue full-time research towards a higher degree (Masters by Research 66% or 100%, or PhD) while receiving induction and mentoring, and the opportunity of gaining professional experience in academic teaching (tutoring, lecturing and seminarship). Teaching and Research Scholarships will be tenable in designated disciplines across the Faculty. Applicants must consult with their intended school of enrolment prior to submitting an application.

Research component: $ 14,707 per annum (pro rata), paid fornightly at a fixed rate.

Teaching component: teaching fraction 0.2 of Level A, step 8 academic salary ($49,874 per annum pro rata) paid fornightly at a fixed rate.

PhD: 3 years
100% Masters: 2 years
66% Masters: 1.5 years

Eligibility

The scholarship is available to Australian citizens or permanent residents.

Applicants must meet the admission criteria for their chosen research degree  and must have an overall H2A result (or equivalent) for their qualifying degree.

Evidence of previous teaching/tutorial experience or potential for teaching is desirable.

Applicants must start a research Masters (66% or 100% research) or PhD degree as a full time candidate between 1 January and 1 March 

OR be currently enrolled as an HDR candidate in one of the participating disciplines.

Applicants currently holding a continuing postgraduate scholarship from Monash University are not eligible.

Scholarship schedule

New commencing candidates: those commencing candidature in 2010 will not have teaching commitments (or a teaching salary) in the first four-six months of their T&R scholarship. Teaching will commence in Semester 2, 2010. Awardees will be paid a Monash Departmental Scholarship (MDS) by the relevant School for the period of enrolment in Semester 1, 2010. The MDS component should be equal to the 0.2 Level A Assistant Lecturer gross salary (pro rata) paid fornightly at a fixed rate.

Continuing candidates: Awardees that commenced their research degree before 2010 and have undertaken at least 4-6 months of HDR candidature will normally commence the teaching component of the scholarship in Semester 1, 2010.

Applicants must submit an application form with supporting documentation to the Arts Research Graduate School by 31 October each year.
