Oliver Caffrey
3rd year, Gippsland
Where I want to be five years from now
Working in a Melbourne sports newsroom and hopefully well entrenched in my journalism career.
Where I was five years ago
Studying at Lavalla Catholic College, Traralgon.
My favourite kind of news
Any type of sports news, but my favourite without doubt is AFL. Since I have been at university, I’ve taken a keen interest in most types of news, but I do try and stay away from the financial reports.
What I like about studying journalism in Gippsland
I live in Traralgon, so it’s a convenient location. Also the smaller class sizes, compared to some other campuses, allow for a more interactive learning experience and I’ve made some great friends in the process.
A journalist I admire
Laurie Oakes because he continues to get better with age. He can still break a massive story after more than 40 years of being a journalist.
I am passionate about
AFL and my team the Brisbane Lions (even when they are having a terrible season, like this one).
I unwind by
Watching movies and hanging out with friends.
My favourite time of the day is
Late afternoon to early evening. I am definitely not a morning person!
Two important people to me are
Mum and Dad because they have always been there for me and I wouldn’t be where I am without them.
My strategy for survival at uni is
Attending as many lectures and tutorials as possible. Trying not to let the assignments pile up, but that usually happens anyway.
A news story to mark this month was
The $37 million sexual harassment lawsuit directed at David Jones. It seems an extraordinary amount when other sexual harassment cases are resolved for far less.
