New configurations: Nurses and builders managing work and care

JaneMaree Maher, Jo Lindsay and Anne Bardoel

Monash University

Abstract
In this seminar we explore the way working families negotiate paid work and care for young children in a rapidly changing industrial and family landscape. We report on in-depth couple interviews with nurses and builders and their partners to examine to extent to which work and family are being reconfigured and the possibilities for progressive change. Nursing and construction remain gender segregated industries but both have undergone substantial industrial change in the last few decades. We explore the potential and opportunity of time sovereignty for these workers, a crucial element in negotiating work and family successfully.
