Jan van Bommel has been Head of Sociology in the School of Political and Social Inquiry since 2002. She has a BA (Hons) from Queen's University (Canada), an MA from Melbourne University and a PhD in Sociology from La Trobe University. She came to Monash Sociology in 1987 and was appointed the foundational Director for the Centre for Women's Studies in the Faculty of Arts. At the end of a 5-year term she returned to Sociology.
Jan is the Sociology Postgraduate Coordinator (Research).
Jan co-edits the Journal of Intercultural Studies, an international refereed Taylor and Francis (Routledge) publication, with Dr Anita Harris (Sociology).

Research
Dr van Bommel's current research interests include: the feminisms; female subjectivities and politics; women, psychiatry and madness and qualitative research methodologies.
