Biography
Dr Tseen Khoo is a Monash University Research Fellow (2004-2009), based in Sociology. Previous to this, she was a University of Queensland Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2001-2004) in the School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies, University of Queensland, Australia. She has published on Asian-Australian cultural production and politics, multicultural/race issues in Australia, and Asian diaporic studies. Her monograph, Banana Bending: Asian-Australian and Asian-Canadian Literatures, was published in 2003 by McGill-Queens University Press and Hong Kong University Press.
Tseen is co-editor of Diaspora: Negotiating Asian Australia (University of Queensland Press, 2000; with Helen Gilbert [UQ] and Jacqueline Lo [ANU]) and Culture, Identity, Commodity: Diasporic Chinese Literatures in English (Hong Kong UP, 2005; with Kam Louie [Hong Kong University]). Her most recent edited book of essays, Locating Asian Australian Cultures, was published by Routledge in 2008.
Tseen is the convenor of the Asian Australian Studies Research Network (AASRN) and manages the AASRN academic e-list. She is also a committee member for the Association for Canadian Studies in Australia and New Zealand (ACSANZ), and the International Australian Studies Association (InASA).
Research
Tseen's research includes her current fellowship project "Siting Differences: The Politics of Representing Asian Australian Public Narratives", and racialisation and cultural production in Australia. Her other research areas include minority representations in multicultural societies, diasporic Asian cultures, and the politics of ethnic festivals. She currently holds an ARC Discovery grant (2008-2010) with Dean Chan (ECU) and Jacqueline Lo (ANU) titled “Being Asian in Australia and the United States.”
Tseen's supervision interests include immigration, multicultural and racialisation studies in Australia (particularly Asian Australian topics), comparative cultural studies between Australia and Canada, and diasporic Asian studies.
