Sociology Minor and Major Sequences
Sociology teaching and research focuses on industrial and post-industrial societies in a global context. It involves the investigation of human groups, communities, institutions and organizations, and the networks of meaning and association which link individuals and groups to the broader social structures of such societies. The wide range of units available is designed to provide opportunities to explore broad theoretical and methodological issues, to acquire research skills, and to develop an understanding of diverse social institutions and social processes. Many of the substantive units give students a critical understanding of Australian society in its global context.
Minor and major sequences in sociology are offered at Clayton and Caulfield campuses. The essential structure of the program, the intellectual orientation and the skills acquired are the same on each campus.
Minor and Major Sequences
Students studying a minor or major in sociology must have completed the first-year sequence (ATS1365 & ATS1366). In addition:
- a minor requires completion of a further two units (12 points) from the units listed below
- a major requires completion of a further six units (36 points) from the units listed below, including a minimum of one unit from List A.
A maximum of two 'additional elective' units (12 points) can be taken.
List A: Research options
| Unit Code | Unit Name |

*This unit is also a core unit for behavioural studies. Students doing minors/majors in both behavioural studies and sociology would need to choose another unit to make up credit points for both. A unit cannot be counted twice towards separate minors/majors.
