Studies Abroad Program

General information

The Spanish and Latin American Studies Program recognises the value of undertaking studies in Spain or Hispano America as a way of broadening the knowledge students acquire in class and gaining a deeper understanding of Hispanic culture.

Students are eligible to study for one or two semesters abroad in one of the approved universities. First-year students undertaking study abroad are advised to enrol in ATS1201 and ATS1202. Students enrolled in second and third year undertaking study abroad should enrol in ATS2201 (6 credit points), ATS3201 (6 credit points) and ATS3202 (6 credit points).

To undertake studies at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Santiago or the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain, students are required to have an average of 75-80% in every unit completed in the Spanish and Latin American Studies Program.

The Spanish and Latin American Studies Program has three well established agreements with prestigious universities in Chile, Mexico and Spain. Please check Monash Study Abroad Program web page for details.

Students can choose any of these universities to complete one to three units toward their minor or major sequence in Spanish and Latin American Studies.
Students planning to do a major in Spanish are advised to enrol in either PUC (Pontificia Universidad Católica e Chile) or UAM (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid).
Information sessions run every semester during week 5. Check the Spanish and Latin American notice board located on the 5th floor of the West Wing for further details.

Overseas Study Program: Information sessions running every semester in week 5

Information sessions in the Spanish and Latin American Studies Program run every semester during week 5 providing key information to students which will assist them in their planning.
These sessions are run by a staff member from Spanish and Latin American Studies, one from Monash Abroad and one from STA Travel. Three key areas are discussed:

1. Key information about Study Abroad Programs (staff from Monash Abroad)

  • where you can study overseas
  • whether you are eligible
  • how you can finance your trip
  • key documentation and forms to be filled in for your application

2. Key information from the Spanish and Latin American Studies (staff from Spanish and Latin American Studies Program)

  • what are the prerequisites for enrolment
  • what is the process for obtaining approval for the units to be completed overseas
  • which units can be credited
  • What students can do if they need to change their enrolment at the overseas university and how to get approval from Monash while abroad
  • how to further develop your personal and academic skills.

3. Trip advice (staff from STA Travel, Monash)

  • STA special offers to Monash students

First year students or advanced students enrolled in the Spanish and Latin American Studies Program are encouraged to attend these sessions to find out about their eligibility and gain some insights into the opportunities to study overseas.

Meeting our staff from Spanish and Latin American Studies

Before organising a meeting with you to discuss the units you may study abroad and signing off on the Monash Study Abroad form, you'll need to send us:

1. An electronic copy of the Spanish abroad form (available on the Spanish web site)

2. Detailed electronic copies of the outlines for every unit you are planning to take abroad. Please search the relevant overseas university web page.

2.1 The unit outline should include:

  1. The teaching material to be covered during the semester
  2. The number of hours per week
  3. Total number of hours per semester
  4. Type of assessment tasks and the percentages allocated for each of them. (This is very important. Disregard units that have only one examination)
  5. List of reference books and textbooks

In brief, you are required to send us the same information that is provided to you at Monash at the beginning of every semester. If by any chance this information is not available on the foreign university web page, you can contact Monash Abroad or contact the university directly. It is students’ responsibility to provide such information to be assessed by the Spanish and Latin American staff.

Keeping in contact while abroad

In order to maximise your chances of having a rewarding experience abroad the Spanish and Latin American Studies Program takes special care in helping you to select those units that will help your personal and academic development. A number of meetings take place before your trip and we encourage you to maintain regular contact with us while abroad.

Please contact us as soon as you get to the foreign institution and keep in regular contact with the Spanish and Latin American Studies Program: we will be very happy to hear from you.

Frequently asked questions

  1. Can I study the first year of Spanish in Spain or Latin America?

    Yes, you may take
ATS1201 and ATS1202 if you are a beginner.

  2. Can I study in a different university from those that the Spanish and Latin American Studies has agreements with?

You can study anywhere you like, but if you want to study units as part of your minor or major in Spanish and Latin American Studies then you will need to study in one of our approved universities.

  3. Can I study abroad a unit that is not related to the curriculum you have in Spanish and Latin American Studies?

The units you will be selecting abroad need to be in those areas where the Spanish and Latin American Studies program specialises. Broadly speaking you can choose among: Spanish and Latin American Linguistics, Literature and Cinema Studies. Please take a look at the options we offer in our Program.

  4. What happens if I fail the unit abroad?

Every precaution is taken to prevent you from failing your unit abroad. This is done by carefully helping you to select the unit and by knowing your language proficiency and interests.

  5. How many units can I take abroad?

You will need to be a full time student while abroad. This means that you should enrol in at least three units, including units in other disciplines. To enrol as a full-time student you will need to contact lecturers in charge of Studies Abroad Programs in your other disciplines and arrange the enrolment with them.

  6. Can I also enrol in units from a discipline different to Spanish and Latin American Studies?
