Welcome to the Spanish and Latin American Studies Program at Monash University. At Monash you can learn Spanish as a foreign language from beginners to advanced. We offer a unique undergraduate program that incorporates language acquisition and cultural competence, as well as a variety of specialised units in film, linguistics and literary studies. You can also go on to explore your own interests via the Honours program.

We also offer MA and PhD programs by 100% research.

Sequences

First year, minor and major sequences

Pathways at first year

Beginners: Students with no knowledge of Spanish should enrol in SPN1010 Spanish Studies 1 and SPN1020 Spanish Studies 2

Intermediate: Students who have some knowledge of Spanish (i.e. year 11, a VCE score of 30 or below, IB Spanish ab initio should enrol in SPN1030 Spanish Studies 3 and SPN1040 Spanish Studies 4. Students will be required to take a placement test before being allowed to enrol in the intermediate stream.

Advanced: Students who have achieved VCE (or equivalent) with a score above 31 (or equivalent) should enrol in SPN1050 Spanish Studies 5 and Spanish Studies SPN1060 Spanish Studies 6. Students will be required to take a placement test before being allowed to enrol in the advanced stream.

Minor sequence

A minor in Spanish may be achieved by successfully completing either 24 or 30 credit points at first and second year language levels.

Major sequence

All students wishing to pursue a major sequence in Spanish will have to complete a 24-point minor first.

  1. Beginner-stream students take SPN3050 Spanish Studies 5 and SPN3060 Spanish Studies 6, plus 12 points of third-year options.
  2. Intermediate students must complete SPN3070 Spanish Studies 7 and SPN3080 Spanish Studies 8 together with 12 points of third-year options.
  3. Advanced students take any 24 points of third-year options.

The minimum number of credit points needed to complete a major sequence is 48.

Students are strongly encouraged to take additional units in Spanish at either second or third-year language level. Some units may not be offered if there are insufficient enrolments.
