Professional Development Short Courses (Translation and Interpreting)

Monash University Translation & Interpreting Studies is pleased to present a weekend-long workshop on the ethics of interpreting in mental health settings. This event is organised by ASLIA VIC with the collaboration and support of Monash University, Auslan Services Foundation, NABS, VITS Language Link, OnCall Interpreters and Translators, and NAATI. This two-day workshop series will explore areas such as mental health & ethics, self-analysis, Auslan to English techniques, and teamwork skills.

Day 1 (Saturday 2 June) is open to spoken language interpreters, Auslan interpreters, Deaf interpreters, Case Managers, interpreter trainers, all professionals and interpreting students. For further details see attached flyer.

About the Course

The Professional Development Short Course Program (Interpreting and Translation) is delivered by Monash University. It has been funded and developed in partnership with the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship and supported by the Department of Health, Victoria. The aim of the Short Courses is to provide opportunities for practicing interpreters and translators to further develop their skills and knowledge to effectively deliver language services in the community. It also provides a transition into practice for recent graduates of translating and interpreting programs.

Duration

Each module is held over six weeks and is 30 hours in duration. This includes 18 hours of face-to-face sessions and approx. 12 hours of online work and self-study.

Modules

In the June/July 2012 period, the following modules will be run:

This module establishes the principles and protocol and explores best practices associated with interpreting in legal settings. Contextual overviews are given of the Australian legal system, the criminal justice system, the court system and Legal Aid. Participants will familiarise themselves with legal discourse and terminology in these areas. Aspects of the law that are particularly relevant to interpreters are also discussed. The role of the interpreter and ethical issues, procedures, protocol and interpreting techniques are explored in settings such as lawyer-client interactions, police interviews and tribunal hearings. Issues in interpreting in sensitive matters such as family violence cases are also covered, as well as interpreting for Community Correctional Services and prisons.

                             Tuesdays, 6.00pm-9.00pm (Caulfield campus, room H220)

This module explores best practices associated with interpreting in healthcare settings. Contextual overviews are given of the healthcare system, medical specialisations and the roles of healthcare professionals. Interpreting issues are then discussed in relation to hospital and community health settings, aged care, maternity and child health, and medical consultations related to sexual health and blood-borne viruses. The role of the interpreter and ethical issues, cultural and other sensitivities, medical terminology, and interpreting techniques are explored through interactive activities.

Participants may attend modules concurrently.

Location

All modules are held at Monash University’s Caulfield Campus (900 Dandenong Road, Caulfield East).

Fees/Bursaries

The fees are $440 (excl. GST) per module. Payment will be required upon notification of acceptance.

Statement of Completion & Professional Development Points

Participants receive a Statement of Completion upon successful completion of each module, enhancing their marketability to potential employers. Participants will also be able to earn professional development points towards revalidation of their NAATI accreditation and renewal of AUSIT membership. Attendance at one module will earn participants 40 professional development points and completion of one module will count for 60 points.

Applicants would normally have obtained NAATI accreditation OR have successfully completed a NAATI-approved course in translation/interpreting OR hold an equivalent overseas qualification.
