The Australian Women's and Gender Studies Association holds biannual national conferences. These conferences are now accompanied by a meeting of convenors from WS and GS teaching programs around Australia and a lively professional development workshop for postgraduates.

Next conference

The next AWGSA conference will be held in Adelaide from JUNE 29 - JULY 2 2010. The theme is "Emerging Spaces: New Possibilities in Critical Times". A postgraduate day will commence midday on June 29. Click here for the Call for Papers

Past conferences

The 2008 AWGSA conference with the theme ‘Vision, Memory, Spectacle' was held in Perth from 9-12 July 2008. It was convened by Dr Alison Bartlett, Director of the Centre for Women's Studies at the University of Western Australia. Keynote speakers were: Professor Sasha Roseneil (Birbeck Institute, University of London), Dr Felicity Collins (LaTrobe University), Adjunct Prof Pat Dudgeon  (University of Western Australia).

The 2006 AWSA conference, 'Twenty-First Century Feminisms', was held in Melbourne in July 2006 and was convened by Maryanne Dever and JaneMaree Maher of the Centre for Women's Studies & Gender Research, Monash University. Keynote speakers were: Lisa Adkins (Manchester University), Carolyn Allport (President, National Tertiary Education Union), Annamarie Jagose (University of Auckland), Rachel Fensham (University of Surrey) and Maria Jaschok (International Gender Institute, Oxford University).

The 2003 AWSA conference '(Other) Feminisms' was held at the University of Queensland in July 2003 and was convened by Carole Ferrier.  Keynotes included: Elizabeth Wilson and Gabrielle Griffin. Papers from it were published in Hecate 29.2 (2003) and 30.1 (2004). 

In between national conferences, AWGSA sponsors mini-conferences and workshops. AWGSA co-sponsored the conference "Manifesting Literary Feminisms: Drafts, Grafts, Nexus, and Faultlines" at Monash University, City Campus, Melbourne, 13-14 December 2007. The keynote speakers were Prof. Rachel Blau du Plessis (Temple University) and Prof. Susan Sheridan.
