Masters level study in Women's Studies

In Women's Studies we offer two Masters degree programs: Master of Arts (MA) in Women's Studies (by coursework and research) and Master of Arts (MA) in Women's Studies (by research). Women's Studies is an exciting interdisciplinary field of study that seeks to bring innovative theory and research techniques to the study of women's lives, their status in society, and the dilemmas and contradictions in gender relations and sexualities. The interdisciplinary nature of Women's Studies scholarship is an important feature of its success and promise. In our program we strive to provide our graduates with a broad knowledge of, and a familiarity with, feminist theory and methodology. Our research students pursue a diverse range of important and innovative research projects. You can look at what some our students are studying here .

Master of Arts (MA) in Women's Studies (by Coursework and Research)

The MA in Women's Studies can be completed by a combination of coursework and research. This program is recommended for prospective candidates who may not have a strong academic background in feminist theory and gender issues or who are returning to study after a break and who would therefore benefit from the opportunity to undertake coursework study to enhance their understanding of the field. Students enrolled in this program must take two coursework units and complete a research thesis. One unit must be WSM5010 Theorising Gender and one can be selected from the list of level 5 options. The research thesis topic, chosen in close consultation with the supervisor and graduate adviser, will be in the area of Women's Studies.

Master of Arts (MA) in Women's Studies (by Research)

Candidates enrolled in the MA in Women's Studies (by research) complete their degree by thesis alone. Candidates enrolling in this program would normally have a background in feminist theory and gender issues or a similar field of inquiry. The thesis topic should be of relevance to the area of Women's Studies and be approved by the graduate adviser in Women's Studies and the candidate's supervisor(s).
