Scholarships in Women's Studies & Gender Research

Scholarship Information

What Is Available At Monash?

Scholarships are available to suitably qualified candidates for research higher degrees (PhD and Masters by research). The annual scholarship round closes in October each year. From time to time a mid-year scholarship round may be held and applicants should contact the Centre Director to establish whether a mid-year round is scheduled for the current year. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and successful applicants would normally hold a first class honours degree or its equivalent (e.g. coursework Masters with a significant thesis component graded at high distinction). Both Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) and Monash Graduate Scholarships (MGS ) are awarded. Candidates, however, need only submit a single application to cover both schemes. It should be noted that these schemes are highly competitive. Those intending to apply for a scholarship to pursue a research higher degree in Womenís Studies are advised to contact the Director of the Centre for Womenís Studies and Gender Research prior to completing their application form. Applications that are late or incomplete cannot be processed. Forms and further information on scholarships can be obtained from the Monash Research Graduate School.

Faculty of Arts Supplementary Scholarship

The Faculty of Arts has introduced two new opportunities for prospective students:

Monash Arts Research Excellence Awards

The Faculty of Arts at Monash University is introducing two scholarship supplements each of $3,000 per annum for candidates of outstanding quality, topping up the Australian Postgraduate Award Scholarship or the Monash Graduate Scholarship.

Monash Arts Special Research Awards

New scholarship holders whose projects will be enhanced by undertaking significant fieldwork research in Australia or overseas or who have specific software, equipment or technical requirements will be considered for one of two Monash Arts Special Research Awards of $3,000.

Australian citizens and permanent residents are eligible for the above awards.

Successful candidates for the above awards will also be entitled to apply for the University's travel grant scheme that is open to all research candidates at Monash University intending to undertake research, fieldwork or attend a conference in Australia or overseas.

What If I'm Applying From Overseas?

Overseas applicants who wish to apply for a scholarship should first consult the information for International Students. Again, those intending to apply for a scholarship to pursue a research higher degree in Womenís Studies are advised to contact the Director of the Centre for Womenís Studies and Gender Research prior to completing their application forms. Forms and further information on scholarships can be obtained from the Monash Research Graduate School and Monash International.

Are There Other Schemes?

A number of other organisations offer scholarships for overseas students to study in Australia. Intending students from countries within the British Commonwealth (including New Zealand, Canada, India, Malaysia and South Africa) may be eligible to apply for a Commonwealth Scholarship to support their postgraduate study at Monash University. Prospective students will need to investigate eligibility and deadlines for these scholarships. Rotary International sponsors students from around the world to come to Australia to complete further study. Contact the Rotary organisation in your home country. (*Please note we have no direct affiliation with this organisation). The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Australian also sponsors overseas students from selected countries to study in Australia through their AUSAID program. More information can be obtained from their homepage. (*Please note we have no direct affiliation with this scheme). You can also try searching the SPIN database to see if there is research funding directly applicable to your research topic or nationality.

Don't Forget The Australian Federation of University Women!

There is a limited number of alternative sources of financial support for further study for local and overseas students. The Australian Federation of University Women (AFUW), part of the International Federation of University Women (IFUW), offers a number of fellowships and bursaries of different value for women students annually. Information on these schemes is available in the AFUW newsletter and from the AFUW homepage. We encourage all graduates to join the Victorian branch of the AFUW.
