In the area of literary studies, she focuses on Australian women's writing of the 1930s and 1940s, and critical engagements with literary archives and private correspondence. She has been awarded a 2009 Manning Clark House/Copyright Agency of Australia Fellowship to pursue work on her edition of Marjorie Barnard’s letters. Her new book, The Intimate Archive, co-authored with Sally Newman and Ann Vickery will be published by the National Library of Australia in June 2009. With Carole Ferrier (University of Queensland) she held an ARC Discovery Grant (2005-7) to support the editing of the letters between Nettie and Vance Palmer. With Ann Vickery she curated the Rare Book Exhibition, 'Australian Women's Writing 1900-1950' at Monash University in 2007.

In the area of applied social research she focuses on gender, work and higher education. Together with researchers at the University of Queensland's Social Research Centre, she has recently completed a study of gender differences in early post-PhD employment in Australian Universities. This research was funded by the Senior Women's Forum of the Australian Vice-Chancellors' Committee (now Universities Australia). She will be presenting this research at the 6th European Conference on Gender Equality in Higher Education in Stockholm in August 2009.

With Sally Newman she is completing the book, The Woman's Guide to Research Funding, the first Australian guide to provide information on: sources of funding and support for women undertaking research and schemes to support research relating to women and gender issues.
